The Process of Designing Custom Cabinets with Mick-Knacks: From Start to Finish

Welcome to Mick-Knacks! We are a family-owned and operated custom cabinet company based just outside of Sun Prairie, WI. With nearly 20 years of experience in the industry, our team specializes in designing, manufacturing, and installing high-quality custom cabinetry that fits your unique needs and style. Whether you are renovating your kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, basement bar, or crafting space, we are here to make your dream space a reality.

Our Approach to Custom Cabinet Design

We take pride in offering a personalized experience for every customer. From the moment we step into your home to the final installation of your cabinets, our process is designed to be as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Here’s a breakdown of how we design your custom cabinets, from start to finish.

Step 1: On-Site Consultation and Measurement

The design process starts with an on-site consultation where we visit your home to take precise measurements of your kitchen, including wall dimensions, ceiling height, and the locations of windows and doors. This detailed measurement allows us to create a custom layout that perfectly fits your space. If you plan to install new appliances, we’ll also gather the brand and model numbers to ensure we accommodate the varying sizes of appliances like refrigerators, stoves, microwaves, and wall ovens. This ensures that your cabinets are not only functional but also designed to fit seamlessly around your appliances.

During this consultation, we’ll bring along samples of different wood species, finishes, and hardware options so you can see and feel how each material will work in your home. We also encourage you to bring any samples of countertops, backsplash tiles, or flooring, allowing us to ensure your new cabinetry complements your existing design choices.

To enhance the usability of your cabinets, we offer soft-close door hinges, which provide a smooth, quiet close. These hinges not only improve the function of your cabinets but also contribute to their longevity by preventing wear and tear. By the end of the consultation, we’ll have everything we need to start designing custom cabinets that will bring your vision to life.

Step 2: Custom Cabinet Design & Layout

Once we’ve gathered all the necessary measurements and details, our team uses specialized software to create a 3D CAD model of your space. We will populate the walls with custom cabinets, asking important design questions along the way:

  • Wood species: Do you prefer a specific type of wood, like oak, cherry, hickory, alder, or maple?

  • Door and drawer profiles: What kind of style are you envisioning?

  • Storage preferences: Would you like more base cabinet doors or drawers? Are rollout trays something you want in your base cabinets and pantry to maximize storage space?

We also offer custom features like our double trash pull-out design, which we believe is superior to anything currently available on the market. Additionally, we can recommend solutions for blind corners, such as pull-out shelves or lazy Susan options, to make the most of your space.

Step 3: 3D Visualization and Pricing

Once we have your design ready, we will present you with a 3D model of your custom cabinets. This allows you to see exactly how your kitchen, bath, laundry room, or other space will look once the cabinets are installed.

Our design software also provides real-time pricing based on the materials and features you’ve selected. From the cabinet footage to the cost of doors, drawers, rollout trays, and optional features like cookie sheet dividers, spice racks, and lazy Susans, we’ll provide a detailed breakdown. This ensures you know exactly what to expect in terms of cost, with no hidden fees.

Typically, this part of the process takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the complexity of your project and the changes you’d like to make.

Step 4: Manufacturing and Installation

We continuously update our equipment to stay ahead of both the latest technology and industry trends. After you’ve approved your design, we’ll take care of everything from there. Manufacturing your custom cabinets typically takes between 2 weeks and a month, depending on the complexity of your design. When it comes to installation, we focus on minimizing the disruption to your space. Most large kitchens are installed in 3 days or less, while smaller projects can often be completed in just 1 day.
